Māori & Customary

Māori interests hold a significant proportion of the seafood industry and Māori have a huge role to play in the future of New Zealand’s seafood industry.

Traditional Māori fishing and management practices have adapted over the centuries to ensure proper guardianship of kaimoana, kairoto and kaiawa. Training in customary fishing practices is available to encourage the maintenance and revitalisation of customary fishing.

Seafood ITO has training in customary fishing, seafood governance, management, administration and regulatory compliance. This training is available to iwi and Māori groups to assist in managing their customary and commercial assets.
