Māori & Customary qualifications
If you are managing your non-commercial (customary) fishery or have received commercial assets from Te Ohu Kaimoana Trustee Limited, we have a number of qualifications to meet your needs.
The Customary Fishing (Level 3) Certificate focuses on the “doing” of customary fishing, from the making and repairing of traditional nets to traditional utilisation of fish and customary methods of conservation. It recognises the knowledge and practices of customary fishers that enhance the sustainable management of fishing.
The Customary Fishing (Level 4) Certificate recognises the range of technical skills and knowledge of those working in customary fishing management. These skills include compliance, customary fishing management, and legislation relating to customary fishing practices.
The following National Certificates (qualifications) are currently available in Māori & Customary
- National Certificate in Seafood Māori (Customary Fishing) (Level 3)
- National Certificate in Seafood Māori (Customary Fishing Management) (Level 4)
- National Certificate in Seafood Māori (Tangata Kaitiaki/Tiaki) (Level 4)
The Iwi Asset Management qualification has been developed to assist those persons responsible for managing the $350 million worth of fisheries assets transferred by Te Ohu Kaimoana Trustee Limited. The training is specific to the New Zealand seafood industry and comprises of regulatory compliance, administration, governance and management, the Quota Management System and ACE Trading.
The qualification is
The National Diploma in Iwi Fisheries Asset Management is for people who are looking to extend their experience, skills and knowledge in working within Iwi Fisheries management contexts. This may include roles that provide strategic governance and/or management of iwi fisheries assets such as directors of asset holding companies, and trustees and/or representatives of mandated iwi organisations.
